Grosse Ile Township is located on twelve islands in the Detroit River, but the largest main island is simply called Grosse Ile. The island is reachable from the west by two bridges. The north bridge is privately owned (toll), while the south "free" bridge is operated by Wayne County. Residents on the west side of the island can see Trenton and Riverview across the river, while residents on the east side of the island are treated to a beautiful view of Canada. Grosse Ile was named #4 on the SafeWise Report's "50 Safest Cities in Michigan" in March 2014, and Money Magazine named it one of the "Top 100 Places to Live" in 2009.

The island has a small "Main Street" business district. On the south end of the island is a small airport dating to the 1920's, and a former U.S. Navy base that operated from 1929 to 1963. Today the Grosse Ile Municipal Airport is used for general aviation and an occasional docing area for blimps that visit the area to fly over sporting events.

The island's diversity of housing choices includes average family homes to expansive large homes and mansions along the river.
