Downriver is the unofficial name of the cities and townships in southern Wayne County and is considered a part of Metro Detroit. The name derives from the fact that many of the cities are located on the Detroit River, which flows south into Lake Erie.
The area experienced a boom in both population and industry in the early 20th century. Some of the larger industrial plants that were built during this time included BASF, the Ford Rouge Plant Complex, Great Lakes Steel, and McLouth Steel. Auto factories, steel mills, chemical plants, and manufacturing plants were booming, and they needed workers.
Cities that were farther from the industrial boom of Detroit remained mostly rural and agricultural, but the need for additional housing has led to population growth and suburbanization in many areas that were previously farmland.
Today, the cities of Downriver are known as a southern suburban part of the Detroit Metro region with mostly working-class residential neighborhoods and some industry, with many recreation opportunities.
According to the 2019 census data, the estimated population for southeast Wayne County was 116,280. With an estimated area of 26.4 square miles, the estimated population density is 4,405 people per square mile. The median household income is $51,407, with an estimated 46,478 households in this area.
The major employers in this area include Ford Motor Company, Oakwood Healthcare, Henry Ford Health System, Johnson Controls, U.S. Steel - Great Lakes Works, DTE Energy, Cleveland-Cliffs Steel, General Motors, and Beaumont Health System.
