With Lake Erie located immediately to the east, many residents enjoy living on or near the water. The rest of Erie Township remains a largely rural community with many farms and orchards. The small, unincorporated community of Erie is located at the intersection of Erie Road and M-125, which connects Monroe to Toledo.

The residental community of Luna Pier is in the northeast corner of the township. The community has 4.5 miles of continuous Lake Erie shoreline. Many of the city's residental homes enjoy views of the lake. Residents and visitors to this small town may also enjoy a public beach and bath house in the summer months, charter fishing, boat launch facilities, four recreation parks, bike paths, and a crescent-shaped concrete pier that reaches out about 200 feet into Lake Erie.

Erie Township is jurisdiction over the Lost Peninsula, a small enclave cut off from the rest of Monroe County that contains a marina and a few homes in a private residential community. Land access to the peninsula is only possible by leaving Michigan and traveling through a small portion of Ohio. Nearby is Turtle Island, a small uninhabited island that has remained locked in an ownership dispute between Michigan and Ohio.
